the swedish air force purchases of various types of italian combat aircraft in 1939–41 emergency measure caused outbreak of war. there no other nations willing supply aircraft small neutral country , domestic production insufficient until 1943. 1940 1941, sweden received 72 cr.42s, equipped radios, 20-millimetre (0.79 in) armour plate behind pilot , ski landing gear. swedish aircraft designated j 11.


the j 11s assigned f 9 wing, responsible air defence of gothenburg, transferred newly established f 13 wing in norrköping in 1943 when f 9 received more advanced j 22 fighters.


the j 11s operating kiruna, in north of sweden, equipped ski undercarriage. in spring 1942, j 11s of 1. division moved luleå airfield. j 11s scrambled several times intercept german aircraft violating swedish borders, failed make contact. j 11s of 2. , 3. divisions based in gothenburg managed intercept intruders few times, forcing them leave swedish airspace.


during service in swedish air force, cr.42 suffered many accidents, because of poor quality of materials used fiat factory. end of 1942, 8 had been lost, , 17 more end of 1943. in all, on 30 cr.42s lost due accidents , mechanical failures. swedish pilots appreciated j 11 s formidable close-in dogfighting abilities; however, complained low speed, insufficient armament , open cockpits unsuited severe climate of scandinavia.


the remaining j 11s of f 13 wing decommissioned air force 14 march 1945. total of 19 aircraft sold civilian contractor, svensk flygtjänst ab, used 13 of them target tugs 1 season, although type not suited role. 6 j 11s delivered svensk flygtjänst ab source spare parts. aircraft given swedish civil registrations. last j 11 removed register in 1949.


one surviving swedish falco preserved. stored @ f 3 wing; aircraft hidden away future museum. number nc.2453, marked 9 9, today on permanent static display in swedish air force museum (flygvapenmuseum) in linköping.
