lowton born in chesterfield, derbyshire. joined sheffield united aged fifteen after spell leeds united , progressed through sheffield united s youth set reserve level, converting full-back central defensive role in process. after spending spell on loan @ sheffield fc in 2008, in january 2009 lowton went out on loan sheffield united s hungarian sister club ferencváros, along fellow reserve player sam wedgbury, first-team experience. made début in hungarian league cup next month, making eighteen appearances before returning united towards end of season.


back in championship, lowton found himself on fringes of first team , duly made blades début in 1–1 draw cardiff city @ end of march 2010, coming on late substitute, before making full début club in final match of season.


the following season, lowton started sheffield united s opening day fixture, away cardiff city, issued straight red card. despite setback, returned first-team picture , rewarded new contract @ end of september. lowton continued run of substitute appearances , rewarded united s faith scoring first senior goal in mid-october, netting in 3–3 home draw burnley. lowton played regularly remainder of season, scoring 4 goals in all, couldn t prevent club slipping relegation.


with blades in league one, lowton remained key player , rewarded extended contract in august 2011, making 55 appearances in total blades during following season , scoring 1 goal.
