in 1980s boswell approached popular tyneside novelist catherine cookson idea (of second wife, lena) adapt cookson s semi-autobiographical katie mulholland stage musical. directed ken hill, wrote dialogue around boswell s songs, elaborate staging formed centrepiece of 1983 newcastle festival, selling out newcastle playhouse 5 weeks. boswell s sondheimesque score included pastiches of gospel, vaudeville , barbershop. existing song jenny there, paean annual funfair on newcastle town moor known hoppin s suitably amended katie production, other numbers newly written. musical s success may have inspired flurry of subsequent stage , television dramatisations of cookson s novels.
