the festival took place 1 year after woodstock, , goose lake promoters set out create better planned event better facilities rock fans woodstock. lead promoter richard songer, wealthy 35-year-old man had been successful in construction business. songer teamed experienced detroit disc jockey , promoter, russ gibb, , associate, tom wright, plan festival.
goose lake park built on 390 acres of land, budget of $1 million, , billed world s first permanent festival site . projected 60,000 fans attend first festival.
the stage built on large, revolving turntable 2 performance spaces previous band disassemble gear , next band set while current band performing. @ end of each performance, stage rotate 180 degrees, , next act begin performing immediately. backstage area had tent 20 30 groupies described sizzlers available performers.
those attended provided free campsites, free parking , free firewood. there restrooms , showers every 500 feet, medical staff, motorcycle , dune buggy trails, lake beach, , longest slide in world . keep gate crashers out, site surrounded high chain-link fence topped barbed wire.
the admission price three-day event $15.00, , entry tokens in style of poker chips sold avoid counterfeiting of paper tickets.
before festival, concerned local officials sought temporary restraining order prevent event, judge denied request. many canadian rock fans turned @ border crossings , unable attend.
performers
national , international acts performing @ festival included faces featuring rod stewart, jethro tull, chicago, ten years after, flying burrito brothers, mountain, john sebastian, james gang featuring joe walsh, flock , litter.
notable detroit area bands performing included bob seger, mc5, stooges, detroit featuring mitch ryder, brownsville station, savage grace, third power , src. masters of ceremonies teegarden & van winkle, performed.
savoy brown, joe cocker , alice cooper announced acts did not perform due contractual problems.
the festival
an estimated 200,000 rock music fans attended festival. initial attitude of young, hip police force toward fans in attendance leave them alone , @ least when inside festival grounds. festival known widespread, openly visible drug sales , public nudity
john laycock of windsor star praised festival, writing organization men of goose lake have resurrected spirit of woodstock without discomforts , giant amphitheatre superbly equipped. laycock mentioned performances of frost, savage grace, chicago, flock, jethro tull, john sebastian, faces, ten years after, mountain , flying burrito brothers particularly memorable. tom wright, responsible staging , logistics @ festival, including design of revolving stage, reported had gone off virtually hitch free .
