history

on 1 july 1955, montana air national guard 186th fighter-interceptor squadron authorized expand group level, , 120th fighter group (air defense) established national guard bureau. 186th fis becoming group s flying squadron. other squadrons assigned group 120th headquarters, 120th material squadron (maintenance), 120th combat support squadron, , 120th usaf dispensary. group gained 29th air division, air defense command mission air defense of northern tier of united states.


in 1958, 120th implemented adc runway alert program, in interceptors of 186th fis committed five-minute runway alert, task last 38 years. arrival of f-102 delta dagger in 1966 ushered in supersonic age. in 1968 air defense command re-designated aerospace defense command (adcom). in 1972, unit redesignated 120th fighter-interceptor group , assigned f-106 delta dart, first air national guard unit receive aircraft. f-106, squadron competed in , won first william tell, live-fire missile competition held @ tyndall afb, florida. performed air defense duties along northern tier of united states until 1978 when adcom merged tactical air command. continued air defense mission adtac component of tac f-106s, transferring first air force when adtac replaced in 1985.

the 186th fs converted f-106a f-16a/b fighting falcon in mid-1987. conversion happened earlier scheduled , 186th fis last squadron lose f-106s. first aircraft older block 5 , 10 models block 15 airframes being delivered squadron. main task unit air defense, many ang units equipped f-16. in 1991 f-16s brought air defense fighter (adf) variant. meant serious leap in performance , capability of squadron in defensive role. situation maintained until 2001 when squadron started receiving more modern f-16c block 30 aircraft larger intakes. conversion replaced air defense mission 1 of general purpose/air-to-ground part of expeditionary aerospace force.


with conversion, unit members felt time consider change in aircraft tail markings. notable change included 186th fighter squadron s nickname of vigilantes . nickname pilots of 186th intended honor first men in montana territory organized safety , welfare of people.


the squadron once again found on alert status after terrorism attacks in new york city , washington, d.c. base personnel implemented necessary procedures establish secure environment while maintaining 24-hour alert status aircraft. during 2002, hundreds of unit personnel activated , deployed multiple locations in support of operation enduring freedom , world.


as result of 2005 brac decisions unit converted f-15c/d during 2008 , revert all-air defense unit. in december 2007 first f-16 left great falls being transferred 158th fighter wing, vermont ang. summer of 2008, eighteen f-15c eagles had been transferred 131st fighter wing @ st. louis due conversion 131st bomb wing, flying b-2 stealth bomber.


beginning in summer of 2013, wing began process of transferring f-15c aircraft 144th fighter wing of california air national guard. final f-15 aircraft departed great falls on october 24, 2013. 120th received first c-130h 19th airlift wing on march 1, 2014
