prior 1973, ncaa divided 2 divisions, university , college. college division teams (also referred small college ) ranked in polls ap (a panel of writers) , upi (coaches). national champion(s) each season determined final poll rankings, published @ or near end of regular season, before bowl games played.

in 1966, both services ranked san diego state aztecs (10–0) @ top, montana state bobcats (8–2) ranked second upi , third ap, led quarterbacks don horn , dennis erickson, respectively. later met in camellia bowl in sacramento, san diego state prevailing, 28–7.
