a-league/usl first division

the toronto lynx announced expansion rights in toronto on june 24, 1996, , played first a-league game in jacksonville, florida, on april 12, 1997. toronto lynx set a-league record of 10 consecutive wins during first season in 1997. in 2000, lynx proceeded eastern conference finals , 1-0 loss rochester raging rhinos kept lynx out of a-league championship game. despite these temporary successes, on years spent in a-league (later renamed usl-d1), team fared relatively poorly on field , failed consistently draw crowds of more 2000 people.


peter pinizzotto toronto lynx head coach 1997 2003. team made 1 playoff appearance under reign. next season hired assistant coach rivals montreal impact. in september 2003, duncan wilde appointed new toronto lynx head coach 2004 season bringing new philosophy , vision club. wilde holds position of director of toronto lynx premier soccer academy , super y-league program accomplishing mission of developing , inspiring youth soccer talent in greater toronto area. after 1 season, wilde resigned head coaching position amidst rumours of owner interference in squad selection. during 2005 season team managed former lynx goalkeeper hubert busby jr., though wilde returned head coach 2006 season. in debut season in open canada cup wilde led lynx final of tournament, defeated 2-0 ottawa st. anthony italia.


during time in a-league , usl first division, lynx noted developing number of notable players, failed retain of them long, leading poor results in league standings.


on october 10, 2006, lynx announced voluntarily relegating 2 levels, usl premier development league. reasons never revealed, due low attendance (the lowest in usl 1st division @ time) , fact major league soccer expansion franchise toronto fc arriving city next season.

toronto s first year in pdl difficult one; lost opening game 3-0 west michigan edge, , didn t pick first win until fifth game of season, 2-0 defeat away @ indiana invaders. lynx s main problem inconsistency, away home, suffered several difficult defeats, including 4-0 thrashing @ hands of michigan bucks, , 3-1 defeat cleveland internationals in august. home form better, , enjoyed several excellent results, notably comprehensive 5-0 win on indiana invaders included 2-goal haul murphy wiredu, , 5-1 revenge win on cleveland in wiredu scored brace. unexpected 3-1 victory on divisional champs michigan on final day of season ended year brightly; finished in fourth place, 6 points off playoff spot. prolific murphy wiredu lynx s top scorer, 10 goals.


toronto built on 2007 form better season in 2008. overpowered fort wayne fever 4-1 in opening fixture in front of on 1,200 fans, , enjoyed scintillating run of form throughout month of june, picking 5 wins 2 ties in 9 games, including breathless 3-2 win on west michigan edge in scored twice in last 2 minutes, , strong 1-0 win on eventual divisional champions, michigan bucks. despite pair of impressive back-to-back 4-0 wins on indiana invaders , cincinnati kings in run-in - last of saw 4 goals being scored daniel revivo - toronto s final day defeat michigan left them in third place in great lakes division, squeaking playoffs on games won ahead of des moines menace, needing negotiate preliminary divisional round play-in game against cleveland internationals. unfortunately lynx, cleveland scored late winner take game 2-1, sending ontarians home early. daniel revivo toronto s top scorer, 9 goals on season, while welshman lloyd grist contributed 4 assists.
