topography

penang hill hilly granitic mass. hill system higher towards northern part highest point @ western hill, @ elevation of 833 m (2,723 ft) above sea level. other western hill, there number of peaks in region, such bukit laksamana (malay admiral hill), tiger hill, flagstaff hill, haliburton s hill , government hill. flagstaff hill 735 m (2,450 ft) above sea level. number of small rivers , streams originate region. sungai pinang (malay penang river) largest of rivers, , starts number of tributaries in area.

because penang hill has cooler environment, has been popular holiday retreat. number of bungalows built around flagstaff hill. northern part of hills not developed. government hill, bukit timah (malay tin hill) , others designated water catchment areas , no development permitted.


some recreational potential exists @ upper reaches of river water relatively clean. in number of cases, sudden changes in ground level have resulted in series of small waterfalls , rapids, bathing, dipping , picnicking popular.

alternatively, there 5.1 km (3.2 mi) tarred road known popularly jeep track . open vehicles of hill residents. jeep track used off-road motorcycle enthusiasts traverse steep terrain. popular hiking route. begins @ quarry @ entrance of penang botanic gardens , takes 2 or three-hour leisurely hike reach top. of more famous pit stops @ mountain 52 , 84. @ these pit stops, view of island visible hikers, able water , tea prepared locals stationed on hill. eighty 4 last pit stop before top of penang hill – approximately forty 5 more minutes 84.

jalan sultan yahya petra, more commonly known summit road, leads top station western part of hill right towards western hill , tiger hill.


the eastern face of penang hill served series of roads , paths, example, moniot road, viaduct road, , tunnel road. moniot road named after frenchman, michael jules moniot surveyed between 1846 , 1855. moniot road has been declared heritage trail in 1995 governor of penang.
