ugm first state university in indonesia, established universiteit negeri gadjah mada (ungm) when indonesia still facing threats netherlands, wanted regain control. @ time, capital of indonesia had moved jakarta yogyakarta.


ugm established through government regulation (pp) no. 23 of 1949, regarding merger of colleges form university. although regulations dated 16 december, ugm s inauguration took place on 19 december, intentionally chosen coincide anniversary of dutch invasion of city of yogyakarta, 1 year prior on 19 december 1948. intentional date meant show 1 year after netherlands had invaded city, government establish nationwide university there.


when founded, ugm had 6 faculties: medicine, dentistry, , pharmacy; law, social , political sciences; engineering; letters, pedagogy , philosophy; agriculture; , veterinary medicine.


from 1952 until 1972, faculty of law, social , political sciences split 2 faculties: surabaya branch of faculty of law, social, , political sciences; , faculty of education , teacher training, integrated ikip yogyakarta (now universitas negeri yogyakarta).


during initial years of dutch resistance, university taught literature , law in buildings , other facilities belonging palace of sultan hamengkubuwono ix, volunteered palace university’s use. ugm gradually established campus of own in bulaksumur, on northern side of yogyakarta, , occupies area of 3 square kilometres.
