stratford caldecott born in 1953, in london, parents had left south africa in 1951. family espoused no particular religious beliefs. child, sickly , bedridden of time, , developed close relationship mother. father publisher penguin books, fueled stratford s love of reading. attended dulwich college. teenager caldecott fell in love america through exposure comic books, , portrayal of fight between , evil, , theme of hope. between dulwich , university went america, earning money mother s , stayed first family in new england before touring continent greyhound bus. after year, attended hertford college, oxford on scholarship , studied philosophy , psychology.


after taking degree, caldecott pursued career in publishing , education senior editor publishers routledge, harpercollins, , t&t clark. in 1977, married fellow student leonie richards. ceremony held in anglican ceremony, in deference family. , wife had 3 daughters.
