because of minimalist legal basis, eurogroup informal body large discretionary powers. though such nature may have allowed decisiveness in decision making during euro crisis, led eurogroup suffer lack of accountability , limited democratic oversight. hence growing number of critics various stakeholders against undemocratic aspects of eurogroup.


in 2017, commissioner pierre moscovici described the eurogroup pale imitation of democratic body. , former greek finance minister yanis varoufakis vocally denounced outrageous opacity . non-transparency of eurogroup significant factor in formation of diem25 movement re-democratize europe , varoufakis belongs. ngo transparency international has repeatedly called overhaul of governance of eurogroup. european ombudsman has opened case on matter, demanding more transparency.
