david gates tulsa, ok. had 45 in late 1950s entitled living doll on atlantic. (it did not make billboard hot 100, however.) gates knew leon russell , both played in bar bands around tulsa area. both gates , russell headed california check out music scene there.
before forming bread, gates had worked royer s previous band, pleasure fair. pleasure fair wrote , recorded song 1970 academy award winning movie lovers , other strangers, know. not hit group, hit later on carpenters. gates produced , arranged band s 1967 album, pleasure fair. royer introduced gates songwriting partner, griffin, , trio joined in 1968 , signed elektra records in january 1969, after choosing name bread in late 1968, supposedly after getting stuck in traffic behind wonder bread truck.the group s first single, dismal day , released in june 1969 did not chart. debut album, bread, released in september 1969 , peaked @ no. 127 on billboard 200. songwriting on album split evenly between gates , team of griffin-royer. jim gordon, session musician, accompanied band on drums album.
on july 25, 1969 bread appeared in concert first time, gordon on drums, @ aquarius theater in hollywood, opening flying burrito brothers. when gordon s schedule conflicted , proved unavailable future outings, brought in mike botts permanent drummer. botts, whom gates had worked in botts s group travelers 3 producer, appeared on second album, on waters (released in july 1970 , peaking @ no. 12 on billboard 200). time efforts established bread major act billboard hot 100 no. 1 hit make in 1970. make bread s no. 1 on hot 100.

royer, after conflicts gates, left group in summer of 1971 after 3 albums, although continue write griffin, , replaced larry knechtel, leading los angeles session musician had played piano on simon & garfunkel s bridge on troubled water single in 1970.
in january 1972 bread released baby m-a want you, successful album, peaking @ no. 3 on billboard 200. title song established hit in late 1971 before album released, hitting no. 3. follow-up singles own , diary went top 20.
the next album, guitar man, released ten months later , went no. 18. album produced 3 top 20 singles, guitar man (#11), sweet surrender (#15), , aubrey (#15), first 2 going no. 1 on billboard s adult contemporary chart.
