the ps-84 had flown aeroflot passenger transport before world war ii. when germany attacked soviet union in 1941 many of ps-84s taken military use , redesignated lisunov li-2 in 1942. military models equipped 7.62 mm (.30 in) shkas machine gun, , later 12.7 mm (.50 in) ubk heavy machine gun. aircraft used transport, partisan supply, bombing, , ambulance aircraft. version designated li-2vv (vojenny variant = military variant) had redesigned nose defensive armament , carry 4 250 kg (551 lb) bombs under wings. smaller bombs carried inside fuselage , thrown out of freight hatch crew.
a total of 4,937 aircraft produced of li-2 variants between 1940 , 1954 , saw extensive use in eastern europe until 1960s. last survivors in use noted in china , vietnam during 1980s. there many versions, including airliner, cargo, military transport, reconnaissance, aerial photography, parachute drop, bomber , high altitude variants. in poland fitted cropdusting against forest pests. li-2 saw extensive service in chinese air force in 1940s , 1950s.

several airlines operated lisunov li-2s, among others aeroflot, caak, csa, lot, malÉv, polar aviation, tabso , tarom.
only 1 li-2 restored airworthy condition exists in europe. hungarian registered ha-lix built in 1949 in airframe factory nr.84 (gaz-84) of tashkent, serial number 18433209 , still flies sightseeing tours , regularly participates @ air shows. north korean air force known still use number of li-2s transport, although may have been decommissioned despite continued presence on airbases.
