elizabeth farm house 1 of oldest remaining farmhouses in australia, though remains of initial house said 1 room. regarded 1 of premier examples of colonial architecture in australia.

in centre of farm have built excellent brick house, 68 feet (21m) in front, , 18 feet (5.5m) in breadth. has no upper story, consists of 4 rooms on ground floor…


the initial house rectangular in plan, divided down middle hallway 2 rooms on either side. house underwent many changes both after construction , on time, first of being addition of north verandah. verandah sign of prestige indicated occupant of more leisured social class. elizabeth farm verandah believed 1 of first of nature in australia giving birth feature has become characteristic of rural homesteads in country, tradition continues present day.


hambleden cottage built in 1824 (by john macarthur , henry kitchen), in colonial georgian style, few hundred yards away @ bottom of hill elizabeth farm house sat upon making homestead group of buildings. cottage first occupied john macarthur s son, edward, later becoming home former governess.


both house , cottage have managed survive present day. elizabeth farm managed sydney living museums (the historic houses trust of nsw) while cottage run parramatta , district historical society.

the estate consisted of 5000 acres of prime pasture land 2 notable dwellings; camden park house , belgenny cottage.


the original belgenny cottage designed , built henry kitchen in 1820s. symmetrical georgian style has been heavily altered original, retaining of original vernacular. cottage stood john macarthur s residence whilst awaited completion of camden park house.


macarthur had decided family relocate camden , in turn, commissioned camden park house. completed in 1835, after death of john macarthur, having been supervised sons james , william macarthur. john verge , mortimer lewis drew plans macarthur regarding house , design verge subsequently chosen. house stands on rise amid plantation of trees presenting original palladian style, columned portico towards garden side. 2 storey wing added in 1880 giving overall of dwelling 1 akin old colonial regency. built of brick has been stuccoed , limned stone combines use of local sandstone window surrounds , columns add texture , colour building.


the descendants of john macarthur continue live in camden park house.
