the first section of murwillimbah line (which byron bay train uses) opened between lismore , murwillumbah, connecting richmond , tweed rivers. passengers , goods transported sydney coastal shipping byron bay. 9 years later, extension lismore casino opened (and later south grafton – not until 1932 line connected sydney). line became branch line when in 1930, north coast line extended kyogle south brisbane.
the section of track north of town centre has been restored private investment @ cost of $300,000 per kilometre.. track work on section commenced on 23 may 2016 , completed in late november 2016. new platforms , storage shed completed in april 2017, focus on recruitment , training of drivers, station staff , testing of train prior commencement of passenger services christmas 2017. confirmed in january 2017 train run on solar-hybrid operation. solar service believed world first.
