the game set in different areas of hanuda village, including karuwari , tabori districts, hanuda mine, , saiga hospital. village home unique mana religion. dead humans roam area, shibito (屍人, lit. corpse people ), result of mana god kaiko (蚕子, lit. silkworm child ), primary antagonist. because of kaiko s influence, hanuda cut off outside world, preventing communication and/or escape village.

story

on august 3, 2007, american tv crew visits area of hanuda village, japan, mountain village vanished in 1976. @ night, sol , melissa stumble upon mana ritual, yukie kobe murdered sacrifice. suddenly, howard wright intervenes, allowing miyako escape unharmed. howard runs find help; instead, encounters policeman tries kill him. howard manages kill officer , escape, discovering man dead. howard crosses bridge, ominous siren shakes mountain, , policeman—a shibito—reappears , shoots howard in chest. falls river below. meanwhile, yukie resurrects shibito , attacks camera crew, separating them siren wails.

howard wakes downstream, having somehow survived gunshot. briefly assisted amana, though separated when shibito knocks howard down , carries amana away. sam reawakens @ hanuda mines, , reunites melissa short time. meanwhile, bella, hiding in saiga hospital, tries call help; draws in sol, shibito, attacks melissa shortly afterward. howard encounters miyako , seigo saiga, recognizing latter ritual, before attempting escape hanuda miyako. later, sam meets saiga; melissa reunites him. leave, saiga decides kill himself after yukie—his fianceé—appears again. monroes encounter bella—who, horror, died , has become shibito.

while happening, amana recovers lost memories, remembering bring god kaiko world. subdues howard, , takes miyako away shibito nest. howard pursues them, late: miyako has been sacrificed. delving further in, howard encounters shibito of sam , bella, insane melissa, shoots , kills him. inexplicably, howard s , bella s deaths cause time loop. player returns point howard, alive, first encountered amana. time, howard, remembering actions previous timeline, runs away her; , amana, retaining memories, not follow.

in timeline, sol , sam reunite in hanuda mines; while melissa finds bella, safe , sound, in hospital. however, sol dies after , sam surrounded, , melissa dies while saving bella maggot shibito. saiga, getting strange sense of déjà vu, briefly protects bella more shibito before uncovering ancient mana text. later, sam, got separated sol earlier, finds text, discovering events experiencing predestined. howard, meanwhile, recalls miyako had melded blood prevent him becoming shibito himself, , goes off in search her. @ same time, bella leaves hiding in house, , narrowly escapes melissa, shibito.

upon meeting her, howard remembers events of previous timeline. miyako explains him village caught in unending time loop, , must release other power stop it. succeed in breaking seals, amana appears, knocking howard unconscious , kidnapping miyako. afterward, saiga arrives , carries howard hospital, , has bella (who had seen whole thing) come along. when howard comes @ hospital, meets bella , discovers saiga experimenting on shibito. saiga heads hanuda mine on own, fights yukie (now mutated shibito) , retrieves artifact called uryen . @ same time, howard , bella arrive @ shibito nest find miyako , sam. howard, bella, , sam enter core of nest, see amana sacrifice miyako in red sea, summoning otherworldly monster—kaiko. others escape, amana stays, horrified kaiko s form: has gone wrong again.

just then, saiga arrives uryen—the fruit amana supposed use resurrect kaiko in true form. kaiko impales saiga, dies unleashes uryen s sacred fire down upon them. howard gets separated bella , meets sam, had sent howard message brought him here. after asking howard keep bella safe should find again, sam traverses shibito nest core. encounters melissa , sol, each shibito. sol corners bella, melissa intervenes, saving daughter. however, 3 wind falling through orange void, sam s horror. howard, meanwhile, heads area miyako sacrificed, finds miyako s spirit looking @ him in reflection of red sea. requests howard make village disappear, , falls water.

howard enters inferno (いんふぇるの), encounters saiga s spirit. after giving him uryen, saiga battles howard test. howard defeats saiga, , doctor leaves behind sword howard use. amana appears, , offers herself resurrect kaiko s true form: mass of floating insect parts. miyako s spirit guiding him, howard turns saiga s sword vessel other power , uryen s flame unleashes. able fight deity, howard works miyako s spirit see through kaiko s illusions , destroy it. after succeeding, amana returns, saying ritual has succeeded before walking away. meanwhile, sam falls orange void, deposits him hanuda in 1972, after village washed away in flood. comments [e]verything must repeated bella can exist forever , , remembers howard, ensuring events of game repeat.

in epilogue, howard approaches hanuda s shibito, while listening music player. camera reveals armed guns, saiga s sword, , uryen. activating uryen, howard begins destroy village—his promise miyako.
