1906-1973 series (a = stockholm).


until 1973 plates contained 1 or 2 letters , 5 digits. letters standardised codes counties of sweden. second letter (a or b) used counties 5 digits not enough cover vehicles.


the typeface used not consistent vehicle owner bought either plate or kit various dealers, such petrol stations.


opposite many other countries, there no special codes police, post or other national services apart military. 1 tradition official vehicle of governor had number 1 after county code, 1 belonged king.


these plates not used after 1974. vehicles had replace plates. there no historic plates in sweden , historic cars have use modern (post-1973) plates. vehicles on 30 years old , not being used commercial vehicle regarded veteran road authority, becoming tax-exempt , needing pass vehicle inspection every second year. these vehicles use ordinary plates , approval stickers.
