obverse. obverse of badge consists of five-point star (point upwards) surmounted small loop ring, fasten ribbon, each point ending in ball finial. upon center of star attached disc comprising circlet surrounding central disc. circlet inscribed text legion de merito de chile. central disc consists of sky blue enamel background upon depicted column crowned globe, whole resting on ground compartment (the central design taken chilean coat of arms). star rests upon laurel wreath enamel highlights, linked @ top small scroll inscribed text venc en cha, i.e. vencedor en chacabuco (english: victor of chacabuco) had fought @ battle of chacabuco or libertad (english: liberty) had not. underneath star , laurel wreath extend fimbriated rays in silver (legionnaires) or gold (higher classes).

the type class iii , class iv badge omits 5 point star. type ii class iv badge , higher class badges used mix of enamel, silver, gold , (for class badges) jewels. badges produced circlet and/or scroll text swapped between obverse , reverse sides.


method of wear

those appointed legion encouraged wear insignia of legion forms of dress. if did not wish wear badge, regulations provided wear sky blue ribbon of legion passed through buttonhole of coat attachment device or small pin in either silver (for legionnaires) or gold (for remaining classes).


grand officers. in dress uniform, grand officers of legion wore gold star on left side representation of arms of legion. wore sky blue sash on right shoulder gathered in bow on left hip hung badge of legion. when not in dress uniform, grand officers of legion wear badge suspended buttonhole of coat rosette of sky blue ribbon.


officers. in dress uniform, officers of legion wore gold badge of legion suspended neck broad sky blue ribbon. when not in dress uniform, officers of legion wear badge suspended buttonhole of coat rosette of sky blue ribbon.


sub-officers. sub-officers of legion wore gold badge of legion suspended buttonhole of coat sky blue ribbon.
