historical perkins


perkins founded during land run in april 1889. joseph wert staked claim 160 acres , offered 40 acres of land established township. town went through 3 names in first year- cimarron, italy, , perkins. last name bishop walden perkins, congressman kansas pulled strings establish post office new township. town of perkins incorporated on august 25, 1891.


though perkins settled in 1889, celebrates old settlers day around sept 22. anniversary of land run of 1891. being on north side of cimarron river, 1 of starting points run of 1891.


the first wagon bridge across cimarron river built during summer of 1891. on september 22, 1891, sac , fox , iowa reservations officially opened. january 1900, eastern oklahoma railway began service, establishing town agricultural trade center.
