during invasion of sicily, after capture of biscari airfield on 14 july 1943 american soldiers regiment murdered 74 italian , 2 german prisoners of war in 2 massacres @ biscari airfield in july–august 1943. sergeant horace t. west , captain john t. compton charged war crime; west convicted , sentenced life in prison , stripped of rank released private. compton charged killing 40 prisoners in charge acquitted , transferred regiment, died year later in fighting in italy.
