a dock , 30-metre-high (98 ft) limestone cliff near old prison site on east side of island


ko tarutao place of historical importance. between 1938 , 1948, more 3000 thai criminals , political prisoners held here, including sittiporn gridagon, son of rama vii. during world war ii, food , medical supplies mainland depleted , many prisoners died malaria. survived, both prisoners , guards, became pirates in nearby strait of malacca. later suppressed british troops in 1951 deter rise of more prisoners.

a 16 august 2013 bangkok post editorial said human trafficking gangsters use southern tip of island incarcerate , torture muslim rohingya boat people extort ransom money before selling them slavery .
