History Kalvebod Brygge

both kalvebod brygge , railway terrain, separates area rest of vesterbro, located on reclaimed land. coast south of copenhagen formerly known kalvebod beach. first land reclamations took place 1755 when area outside west rampart s rysensten bastion used establishment of lumberyards. tømmergraven (the timber dock) later dug out.

a little further south, copenhagen s first gasworks, later known vestre gasværk ( western gasworks ), opened on beach in 1857.


the railway constructed on reclaimed land between 1897 , 1901. new goods station built on grounds. designed dsb s head architect heinrich wenck , opened in 1901. replaced modern goods station designed ole hagen in 1968.


the new railway obstructed western gasworks access harbor. danish state railways therefore agreed building new gasworks harbour on east side of railway part of project.


the western gasworks closed on 8 june 1927 , site later used construction of white meat district, modern expansion of old meat-packing district (the brown meat district) had been established next haymarket in 1820.
