Fish Hydrodynamic reception
lateral line on atlantic cod
fish , aquatic amphibians detect hydrodynamic stimuli via lateral line. system consists of array of sensors called neuromasts along length of fish s body. neuromasts can free-standing (superficial neuromasts) or within fluid-filled canals (canal neuromasts). sensory cells within neuromasts polarized hair cells contained within gelatinous cupula. cupula, , stereocilia within, moved amount depending on movement of surrounding water. afferent nerve fibers excited or inhibited depending on whether hair cells arise deflected in preferred or opposite direction. lateral line receptors form somatotopic maps within brain informing fish of amplitude , direction of flow @ different points along body. these maps located in medial octavolateral nucleus (mon) of medulla , in higher areas such torus semicircularis.
