the mayor of townsville jenny hill, member of labor party. hill elected in april 2012, replacing retiring les tyrell , defeating main opposing candidate dale last. tyrell immediate past mayor 17 years of former local government authority, city of thuringowa. previous mayor of townsville 19 years tony mooney (australian labor party). hill faced largely hostile chamber in first term, townsville first candidates winning majority of divisions. when local government elections held in march 2016, jenny hill re-elected mayor of townsville while ten of team jenny hill candidates (which included 2 sitting councillors) won in respective divisions.
