history
1961 – 2009

itv border s regional news service began on 1 september 1961 studios @ harraby, carlisle. producing short evening bulletins , topical magazine programme called focus, lookaround become station s flagship daily programme later on in decade. shorter bulletins known border news. meanwhile, itv tyne tees region had own wholly separate news services. lookaround known locally in cumbrian dialect border crack deekabout


in 1989, border began providing sub-regional news service viewers served selkirk transmitter, consisting of short opt-out during lookaround each weeknight. in april 1999, opt-out extended cover dumfries , galloway , dedicated scottish news bulletin introduced on weekday lunchtimes. border opened edinburgh bureau provide coverage of scottish parliament.


2009 – 2013

in september 2007, itv plc announced itv border news operations merged itv tyne tees, subject approval regulator ofcom.


on 24 april 2008, campaign save itv border news operation arrived in london petition of 9000 signed viewers. ahead of mps meeting industry regulator ofcom.


ofcom authorises itv s plans

on 26 september 2008, ofcom authorised itv s plans save £40m year making regional programming cutbacks. these include axing mid-morning bulletins on weekdays , lunchtime bulletins @ weekends, plus merging number of regions , halving number of non-news regional programmes.


on 30 september 2008, announced number of itv border employees slashed 64 13.


following survey of isle of man viewers in autumn 2008, coverage of isle of man transferred itv border itv granada in july 2009.


lookaround begins transmitting gateshead

lookaround retains office in carlisle news editor, planning , online teams based along correspondents, of february 2009, programme transmitted itv tyne tees studios @ watermark, gateshead. main anchors announced ian payne , pam royle. part of merger, 6 district reporters appointed - working home unless based in carlisle or edinburgh. district reporters announced victoria hoe in kendal, hannah lomas in carlisle, lee madan in selkirk, stuart pollitt in whitehaven, olivia richwald in dumfries , kathryn samson in edinburgh.


itv tyne tees & border formed on 25 february 2009, lookaround , north east tonight titles retained 6pm programme , late bulletin each weekday, whilst shorter bulletins known tyne tees & border news.


the remaining sub-regional elements were:

on 14 january 2013, news service relaunched , rebranded itv news lookaround.


2013 – present
southern scotland coverage reviewed

on 23 may 2012, itv announced proposals further changes on regional news programming, content replaced aggregate of news several regions , expansion in sub-regional coverage. in november, upon renewal of itv s licences further ten years, culture secretary maria millar asked ofcom proposals border region leave southern scotland viewers without same level of scottish programming viewers elsewhere in country , covered stv.


in consultation document, ofcom set out 2 potential options, changes coming effect in 2015 @ latest. itv proposed re-introducing full news service exclusively border region, including return of half-hour editions of lookaround , short news bulletins, introducing weekly current affairs programme region. second option enforce itv border broadcast 90 minutes week of non-news programming, including programming stv.


press reports indicated political split in opinion on issue. in april, borders chamber , members of local authority @ newton , scottish borders chamber of commerce publicly supported second option - chamber calling national itv service whole of scotland.


two members of uk government - scottish secretary of state michael moore , deputy david mundell (both mps in border region) - backed itv s proposal border current affairs programme while scottish government called stv programming (including scotland tonight) simulcast.


on 16 may 2013, first televised scottish independence debate broadcast on stv s scotland tonight across northern , central scotland, viewers in south of country unable see itv border took decision not broadcast it, leading further criticism politicians in region. michael jermey, itv director of news , current affairs, pledged programming stv air on itv border.


on 23 july 2013, ofcom announced had approved second option of scottish non-news programming. regulator ordered itv reopen former border scotland service utilized split news bulletins , simulcasts of select stv programming. opt-out service launched on freeview in january 2014 , consists of thrice-weekly political programme, representing border, , weekly feature series, border life. bespoke local programming not seen in cumbria, network programming continues air.


lookaround restored

on 14 june 2013, reported lookaround restored full 30-minute programme along itv recruiting journalists autumn launch.


a month later, ofcom approved itv s plans restore border s news service. short bulletins - including daytime , weekend updates - exclusive border region, minutage decreased. changes came effect on 16 september 2013.


itv tyne tees & border continues broadcast gateshead studios - such, both regional services utilise same presenter(s) , studio/set, therefore 1 of 2 programmes - depending on day s news - pre-recorded live around hour before broadcast. head of itv border s news , regional programmes michaela byrne, based in gateshead, catherine houlihan managing editor, based @ border s carlisle offices.
