frequent , oppressive fog made passage hazardous; , made duty @ light considered hardship in extremely lonely , forbidding place. fog bell signal installed in 1862. in 1864 replaced foghorn. in 1875 converted steam powered fog siren. in 1880 separate fog building built duplicate fog siren. began 10-inch (250 mm) steam whistle , new building in 1900 (which still exists near water s edge). in 1904, there came realization whistles less effective , replaced dual diaphones. horns made living there difficult; fertilized eggs destroyed sounds.


this island , nearby plum island 2 of 4 wisconsin properties turned on u.s. coast guard united states bureau of land management. blm working find new qualified owners, required care properties. coast guard , blm require new stewards maintain buildings.


it listed in national register of historic places in 1972 pilot island light, reference #83004279.


the lighthouse owned united states fish , wildlife service. grounds, dwelling , tower closed. abandoned, overgrown, , overrun large cormorant population.
