beginnings of cricket in new zealand

the first team tour new zealand parr s england xi in 1863–64. between 1864 , 1914, 22 foreign teams toured new zealand. england sent 6 teams, australia 15 , 1 fiji.

first national team

on 15–17 february 1894 first team representing new zealand played new south wales @ lancaster park in christchurch. new south wales won 160 runs. new south wales returned again in 1895–96 , new zealand won solitary game 142 runs, first victory. new zealand cricket council formed towards end of 1894.

new zealand played first 2 internationals (not tests) in 1904–05 against star-studded australia team containing such players victor trumper, warwick armstrong , clem hill. rain saved new zealand thrashing in first match, not second, new zealand lost innings , 358 runs – second largest defeat in new zealand first-class history.

inter-war period

in 1927 nz toured england. played 26 first class matches, against county sides. managed beat worcestershire, glamorgan, somerset, , derbyshire. on strength of performances of tour new zealand granted test status.

in 1929/30 m.c.c toured nz , played 4 tests of 3 days in duration. new zealand lost first test match drew next 3. in second test stewie dempster , jackie mills put on 276 first wicket. still highest partnership new zealand against england. new zealand first played south africa in 1931–32 in 3 match series unable secure test matches against teams other england before world war ii ended test cricket 7 years.

new zealand started new millennium winning 2000 icc knockout trophy in kenya claim first, , far, icc tournament. started 64-run win on zimbabwe proceeded beat pakistan 4 wickets in semi-final. in final against india, chris cairns scored unbeaten 102 in new zealand s run chase helping them win tournament.

shane bond played 17 tests nz between 2001 , 2007 missed far more through injury. when fit, added dimension nz bowling attack had been missing since hadlee retired.

the rise of financial power of bcci had immense effect on nz cricket , players. bcci managed convince other boards not pick players had joined rival twenty-20 indian cricket league. nz cricket lost services of shane bond, lou vincent, andre adams, hamish marshall , daryl tuffey. money made twenty-20 cricket in india may have induced players, such craig mcmillan , scott styris (from test cricket) retire earlier have otherwise. after demise of indian cricket league bond , tuffey again played new zealand.

in mid-2015 new zealand toured england, performing well, drawing test series 1–1, , losing 1 day series, 2–3.

in october december 2015, , in february 2016, new zealand played australia in 2 test series, in 3 , 2 games piece. changing of era in australian team, new zealand rated chance of winning in new zealand. new zealand lost both series 2-nil
