hebrew university of jerusalem

construction of mount scopus campus of hebrew university began in 1918 on land purchased gray hill estate. dedication ceremony held in 1925 in presence of many dignitaries. design university campus sir patrick geddes positioned university buildings on slopes of mount, below domed, hexagonal great hall recalling star of david, counterpoint octagonal dome of rock in old city. plan never implemented, geddes designed university library, today hebrew university faculty of law on mount scopus.


by 1947, university solid research , teaching institution humanities, science, medicine, education , agriculture departments (in rehovot), national library, university press , adult education center. university had student population of on 1,000 , 200 faculty members.


bezalel academy of art , design

bezalel academy of arts , design israel s national school of art, founded in 1906 boris schatz. named biblical figure bezalel, son of uri (hebrew: בְּצַלְאֵל בֶּן־אוּרִי), appointed moses oversee design , construction of tabernacle (exodus 35:30).

the cave of nicanor ancient burial cave located on mount scopus in jerusalem, israel. excavations in cave discovered ossuary referring nicanor door maker. has been identified nicanor of alexandria, donated 1 of gates of herod s temple. cave located in botanical gardens on grounds of national botanical garden (see below).

hadassah hospital (mount scopus)

in 1939, hadassah women s organization opened teaching hospital on mount scopus in building designed architect erich mendelsohn. in 1948, when jordanians occupied east jerusalem , blockaded road mount scopus, hospital no longer function. in 1960, after running clinics in various locations, organization opened medical center on other side of city, in jerusalem s ein karem neighborhood. on april 13, 1948, civilian convoy bringing medical supplies , personnel hadassah hospital on mount scopus attacked arab forces. 78 jews, doctors , nurses, killed in ambush.


hecht synagogue, hebrew university

national botanical garden of israel

the national botanic garden of israel, called land of israel botanic garden, founded on grounds of hebrew university on mount scopus botanist alexander eig in 1931. garden contains 1 of largest collections of israeli uncultivated plants. first home of jerusalem s biblical zoo. cave in garden has been identified tomb of nicanor (see above).
