by 1930s, announcement of widening , realignment of erskineville road, victorian-era town hall set demolished. consequence, erskineville council commissioned plans new town hall on site adjacent old hall. in 1936, initial design sydney architect lindsay gordon scott accepted. design ambitious one, including 2 stories , 75-foot-high clock tower. design found expensive , grand small municipality in working-class area of sydney , revised current design of single storey building without tower in similar red brick georgian revival style. in tribute former council chambers, glass original town hall incorporated new offices.

on 1 december 1937, mayor of council, alderman j. w. elliott, laid foundation stone , year later, on 26 november 1938, secretary public works , minister local government, eric spooner mla, officially opened erskineville town hall mayor @ time, alderman n. mcguinness. however, simpler redesign of town hall found criticism sydney morning herald demanding know how council justify spending £5000 on luxurious chamber when wouldn’t pay immunisation of children against diphtheria.
the new town hall home of erskineville council until abolition in 1948 , community centre until 1968 when municipality of northcott established in area became municipality of south sydney , city of south sydney. town hall seat until abolition in 1983 , became seat of reestablished south sydney council in 1989. served role until late in 2003 when south sydney city council resolved move council chambers south sydney civic centre @ lawson square in redfern.
