description
the former acland no.2 colliery comprises virtually of structures , machinery associated mine when operational. structures include mine portals, tramway, pithead, coal handling , processing plant , of ancillary buildings.
the pithead structures located close eastern side of main road acland , other structures extend north , east of pithead. original mine portal (number 2 portal) located east of pithead , number 3 portal located sixty metres north.
tramway
the underground workings of mine accessed 2 portals, remain extant on site. these portals have been filled in. tramline formations , rails connect underground workings pithead , run workshop. switchgear associated tramway remains intact.
metal tramway wagons, called skips, used carry coal. these remain extant on site , located in pithead structure. skips comprise simple metal bin mounted on tram wheels. skips hauled along tramway cable , pulley system, extant except cable. underground, away main haul road, diesel locomotives used haul skips. these locomotives extant @ mine also.
the winch house associated cable system extant on site north of pithead. structure brown, chamfer board hut corrugated iron roof. hut contains large electric motor connected belt driven pulley system. pulleys drive large metal winding drum. small section of cable remains connected drum. number of operational signs remain extant on walls of hut chalked notes dating 1980s.
pithead, loading gantry , picking belt
the pithead, loading gantry , picking belt form large, multi-level timber , corrugated iron structure dominates site. structure contains of coal handling machinery. tramway travels embankment , enters large opening south of structure, railway siding passes underneath western end , loading gantry , picking belt project northern side. floor of pithead wooden. short wooden slats fastened floor between rails , on northern side provide purchase feet when pushing skips position.
on entering pithead, 1 of tramlines crosses weighbridge. metal weighing mechanism located on northern side of tracks. curved, white graduated scale on top of mechanism faces track. wooden podium stands west of mechanism. top of podium flat , sloped support open book.
after crossing weighbridge, tramlines enter 2 tipplers. tipplers comprise section of track located between 2 metal hoops. whole assembly pivots when skip parked in tippler, can tipped onto side contents can emptied. first tippler empties via space formerly occupied screening plant onto picking belt. second tippler, located @ western end of pithead empties via hopper wagon parked on railway siding.
the picking belt consists of long conveyor belt. raised deck runs length of southern side of belt. workers stood on deck when sorting rocks coal. gear mechanism , electric motor located @ northern end of belt. electric control panel belt located next deck opposite belt. second belt located underneath picking belt. conveys coal towards pithead.
from picking belt, coal carried elevator. elevator consists of chain loop attached series of metal buckets. coal falls buckets , conveyed via chain top of loading gantry. here, coal spills hopper feeds rail wagons parked on siding.
ancillary buildings
workshops
the workshops located northeast of pithead. comprise 2 gabled sheds attached each other. tramline runs western side of mechanical workshop. brown, corrugated iron building. 2 large hinged doors, clad in corrugated iron, provide rail access through western side. wooden door opens south of this. second wooden door opens on opposite side. building has no windows.
a smaller weatherboard shed attached north side of mechanical workshop. electrical workshop. small weatherboard alcove projects northern side of building. sash windows open northern , southern sides of building. small two-paned window opens alcove. building has no external doors.
bob s hut
a gabled, single roomed hut, clad in corrugated iron , unsealed, located northeast of number 3 portal. hut formerly miner s residence. wooden floor of hut fixed bearers sit directly on ground. door opening located on southern side of hut , window opening on eastern side. corrugated iron car port attached eastern side , stove alcove extends southern end next door.
mine manager s office
the former mine manager s office east of workshop. brown, wooden, weatherboard hut gabled, corrugated iron roof. elevated on short stumps. verandah extends full length of western side. verandah not have balustrade. access via short staircase. panelled wooden door opens centre of elevation. 2 sashed windows open either side of door. opposite (eastern) side of house has similar arrangement of door , windows. ramp provides access door on side. steel carport of recent construction projects full length of eastern side. water tank located @ each end of former office.
recent shed
just north of former office corrugated iron shed of recent construction. has gabled roof , roller doors. large flat roofed, open sided shed attached side.
bathroom
the former bathroom, residence, east of pithead. long weatherboard building gabled, corrugated iron roof. short gabled projections extend eastern , western elevations half way along building. aluminium sliding windows open sides of building , aluminium sliding door provides access northern end. hinged door opens eastern side, south of gabled projection.
crib hut , lamp room
the former crib hut , lamp room small, white weatherboard hut gabled corrugated iron roof. hut elevated on short stumps. wooden door provides access eastern end. casement windows open sides. interior of hut contains 3 battery chargers used recharge batteries used in miners lamps. 1 of these chargers still holds miners lamps. selection of equipment , clothing used in mine contained in building.
machinery displays
a simple corrugated iron shelter of recent construction located west of workshops. covers 2 jenbach, diesel locomotives. enclosure near number 3 portal contains mechanical loader , mechanical coal cutter.
ventilation shafts , explosives store
at northernmost end of site, there metal , concrete structure. remains of fan house located on ventilation shaft number 3 mine. similar structure extant @ easternmost extent of site. marks location of ventilation shaft number 2 mine. small explosives hut located @ northeastern extremity of site.
