sport
playing winter sport compulsory junior students (year 9 , 10) encourage social integration college environment. although sport not compulsory in senior years, majority of seniors participate in sport large numbers competing in summer sports offered. rugby popular sport @ college , enjoys large following st john s old boys. there @ least 8 teams, not include special teams selected events under 15s tournament , father fisher trophy. soccer played @ college, , hockey make rest of majority of winter sport participants. there teams basketball, badminton, squash, table tennis, athletics, swimming, tennis, orienteering, canoe polo , touch. cricket far largest sport during summer. cricket teams divided hastings or napier teams in lower grades.
many inter school sporting events take place, notably catholic schools around lower north island. main rivalry remains other marist schools st pat s silverstream , st pat s town in wellington, hato paora in manawatu, , st johns in hamilton.
religion
as catholic school, religion plays important factor in day-to-day lives of st john s college students. participating in masses , chapel, prayers formally conducted @ staff meetings, in form classes start day, @ assemblies , @ school meetings.
kapa haka
st john s college has long , proud tradition of kapa haka. along māori studies, students actively participlate in māori cultural activities inter house haka competition.
