the first phase remove double balanced cantilever span. several alternatives available dismantling method chosen on options involved demolition explosives. in process bridge disassembled, removing individual pieces in reverse order of original construction. required construction of temporary support structures such used in original construction. concurrent effort removed temporary s-curve allowing completion of new span s bicycle , pedestrian path , improvement of east-bound vehicular approaches.
dismantling delayed presence of nesting cormorants. of mid november, main-span portion of western (left) cantilever , tower had been removed , temporary supports erected beneath right portion of eastern cantilever. of may 2015, third of rightmost span remained , june 12, 2015 task completed on november 14, 2015 concrete cellular foundation of pier e3 (which supported eastern cantilever tower) explosively demolished debris falling steel caisson below mud bay bottom. numerous sequentially detonated charges , all-around air bubble curtain used reduce underwater shock waves in order protect marine life. caltrans e3 removal planning details see link
the second phase, underway, entails removal of 5 truss spans , truss causeway third , final phase being removal of underwater foundations.
as old east span dismantled, materials removed structure loaded onto barges , shipped away recycling.
