history

it claimed regular ferry service has run since before 1850, possible 18th century.


rights run ferry had passed duke of norfolk whom rights lord of manor of hayling island had passed on dissolution of monasteries. rights sold mr. william padwick esq. in 1825.


hayling island steam ferry company

formed in 1901 venture bought ferry rights folded after due unsuitability of steam vessel. while mr. sandeman (members of sandeman (port wine) family has resided on island since 1824) had prepared significant infrastructure including pontoons , construction of ferry road across sinah common , kench on hayling side discovered vessel unable transport carriage , restricted foot passengers.

at point after demise of earlier enterprise utililising pontoons built steam vessel george spraggs licensee of tavern on hayling side began operated ferry using motor boats sons until drowning in 1922.


following father s death sons cecil, george , jack continued operation until 1961,. seem have been joined alan spraggs, , cecil engineer. typically used 3 boats, 2 in service , 1 in boatshed.

the spraggs proprietors of ferry boat inn , predecessor norfolk lodge (inn) mutually beneficial hayling ferry operation. 1901 rebranding norfolk lodge inn hayling ferry tavern.


portsmouth city council

portsmouth council took on , operated route 1960 until april 1981 when closed, introducing iris in 1968 , irene in 1974 service. in 1978 briefly introduced tourist service direct southsea using folkstone belle.


hayling island ferry limited

the hayling island ferry company took on operation of ferry in 1985 using hayling enterprise , hampshire county council wished service re-instated , prepared provide subsidy.

initially pontoon on eastney side had deteriorated badly necessary run onto beach.


after restoration of pontoon company purchased 65 seat pride of hayling entered operation in 1989.
in 2009 after 28000 hours of service pride of hayling had engines renewed.
various maintenance, subsidy, operating , financial difficulties , incidents accumulated bring company receivership.

the pride of hayling went in proved extensive maintenance repairs @ end of 2013, 12 seat tina marie sourced continue service in interim january 2014. repairs took on 10 months , monies owed repairers.
this ferry ceased operating in march 2015 company going receivership.



re-opening under baker trayte following closure period

receivers sold boats realise compensation creditors. hoped new purchase pride of hayling , service running again quickly.
in august 2015, baker trayte marine, established marine contractor, purchased pride of hayling ferry intention of reinstating ferry service ferry point on hayling island eastney point on portsmouth side.
the new service launched on 5 august 2016 following strenuous efforts attain required subsidies needed baker trayte business plan including £15155 hayling ferry trust , £5000 richard branson among others.
