early years

bimo setiawan almachzumi (bimbim) created cikini stone complex in 1980s. band covered rolling stones songs. in 1983 band broke up.


accompanied colleagues denny , erwan, bimbim created band red devil. guitarist bimbim brought in bongky. in december 1983 changed band name slank because looked selengean (rebellious or unruly).


the group s initial lineup consisted of kaka (vocals), pay (guitars), bongky (bass), indra qadarsih (keyboards), , bimbim (drums). first album, suit suit...hehehe, not released till 1990. there, more albums, of them commercially successful, followed, slank plagued number of defections, involving personal issues, others having internal tensions based around creative decisions. negativity overcome, , on next 20 years, slank able increase profile, tour world , maintain commercial success. in 2007, slank released 20th album, slow sure.


suit suit...hehehe (1991) enormous hit. subsequent success inspired formation of other bands, such dewa.


their first 3 albums, awarded basf indonesia best selling albums on basf tapes , fourth album generasi biru went multi-platinum, several songs making in indonesia s top charts.


slank became first mtv indonesia icon in 2005.

since inception, slank s band members have changed frequently. reasons have ranged drug use , woman money , differences in musical styles. best line of band kaka (vocals), bimbim (drum), pay (guitar), bongky (bass) , indra (keyboard). in 2007, slank released new album, slow sure ; album s first single slalu begitu played heavily on indonesian radio stations.


in 2008 slank toured u.s. , europe. have played in various asian countries, such thailand, philippines, japan , south korea.


having more fifteen albums sold , causing political controversy in indonesia, slank decided travel usa record first english-speaking album, anthem broken-hearted. blues saraceno chosen producer of album. recorded , mixed album in twenty-two days.

in 2009, surprisingly, slank invited take part in known java jazz festival.


their invitation jazz festival peter f. gontha meant challenge see if had took perform in jazz music setting. show, attended thousands, transformed songs jazz. in spirit of reaching greater jazz audience combining genres, show featured michael paulo, ron king , tony monaco. later described once in lifetime experience .
