o’connor joined united army of liberation in peru in 1824, , 6 months later bolívar appointed him chief of staff. fought @ battle of junín in august 1824 against heavy odds , chose site of battle of ayacucho. in 1825 antonio josé de sucre chose him direct campaign in upper peru, final operation of war, pursuit , elimination of general pedro antonio olañeta, last royalist commander offer resistance.
in 1826 francisco o connor appointed military governor of tarija. in 1827, published proclamation encouraging irish people settle in new erin of tarija. involved in later wars between successor states in south america, helping defeat argentine army @ battle of montenegro in bolivia on 24 june 1838.
he died in tarija on 5 october 1871 @ eighty years of age. memoirs entitled independencia americana: recuerdos de francisco burdett o connor published in 1895.
