daytona international speedway 1 of 6 superspeedways hold nascar races; others michigan international speedway, auto club speedway, indianapolis motor speedway, pocono raceway , talladega superspeedway. standard track four-turn, 2.5-mile (4.0 km) superspeedway. daytona s turns banked @ 31 degrees, , front stretch (the location of finish line) banked @ 18 degrees.

the budweiser shootout created busch beer brand manager monty roberts busch clash in 1979. race, designed promote busch beer, invites fastest nascar drivers previous season compete. race considered warm-up daytona 500. renamed bud shootout in 1998. name changed budweiser shootout in 2001, , rebranded sprint unlimited in 2013.

twenty-eight drivers eligible compete in race, including twelve drivers qualified 2009 chase sprint cup , previous winners @ daytona (including daytona 500 , coke 0 400). past sprint cup series champions , reigning rookie of year allowed take part. kevin harvick defending champion. race scheduled 75 laps long, 2 segments of 25 , 50 laps separated ten-minute pit stop. during pit stop, teams change tires, add fuel, , make normal chassis adjustments not change springs, shock absorbers or rear ends. work done in garage or on pit road. caution , green-flag laps counted in race.

two practice sessions held on thursday evening. first session lasted 45 minutes, while second ran 60 minutes. kevin harvick remained @ home in north carolina recover symptoms of flu, , jeff burton , clint bowyer drove car practice sessions. burton had fastest time (46.557 seconds, fifteen thousands of second faster jamie mcmurray) in first practice session. kyle busch (with time of 46.581 seconds) third, ahead of michael waltrip , mark martin. jimmie johnson, ryan newman, kasey kahne, joey logano , bowyer rounded out top ten fastest drivers in session , six-tenths of second within burton s time. denny hamlin got rear of martin in first turn towards end of session, beginning chain-reaction accident involving cars driven bowyer, logano, greg biffle , brian vickers. mcmurray, martin, bowyer, biffle , hamlin required use backup cars. kahne fastest in second practice session, time of 46.955 seconds. ken schrader second, ahead of matt kenseth , johnson. tony stewart fifth fastest, time of 47.054 seconds. vickers, burton, juan pablo montoya, carl edwards , logano rounded out session s top ten fastest drivers. john andretti slowed caused kurt busch slow in avoidance; montoya hit rear of kurt busch sent him wall. kurt busch required go car. stewart drove garage in middle of session , had radiator changed because debris went through it, , johnson stopped car after completing 1 lap after earlier accident.

the twenty-four drivers determined starting positions lot, feature unique event. edwards drew pole position, harvick in second (which chosen crew chief gil martin). vickers, newman , biffle rounded out top 5 positions. martin drew sixth place , burton drew seventh, ahead of kenseth , mcmurray in eighth , ninth. andretti, dale earnhardt jr., bobby labonte, stewart , schrader drew next 5 positions. waltrip, drew fifteenth, followed johnson, kyle busch, derrike cope, kahne , montoya first twenty spots. logano (which selected crew chief greg zipadelli because logano below legal drinking age), kurt busch, jeff gordon , hamlin drew last positions in race. once lot completed, edwards said, s first race of season, , nice front. s been while since ve been on pole. know didn t earn one, s luck, still feels good.

the 2010 budweiser shootout first exhibition race of season, , televised live in united states fox, began @ 8:10 est. weather conditions @ start of race clear air temperature @ 56 °f (13 °c). reverend l. ronald durham of greater friendship missionary baptist church, daytona began pre-race ceremonies invocation. country music band zac brown band performed national anthem , lead singer zac brown commanded drivers start engines. during pace laps, martin, hamlin , kurt busch moved rear of field because had switched backup cars not used in practice sessions; montoya did same because team made adjustments outside of car impound.

edwards maintained pole position advantage going first turn followed harvick , vickers. vickers moved second place after exiting turn two, while biffle moved ahead of harvick third.
