the fisher river cree nation among hundreds of cree began trading @ norway house—the administrative centre rupert’s land—the watershed stretching hudson bay eastern slopes of rocky mountains , trading hub of hudson s bay company. furs great slave lake traded @ norway house goods such metal , cloth england. 1875 there 800 cree people—mainly hayes , nelson river systems—living @ norway house settlement hundreds employed hbc. 1870s natural resources area around norway house had been depleted , hudson s bay company scaled operations. in 1869 government of canada took on vast area controlled hbc.

in 1870s when hudson s bay company replaced york boats steamboat transportation on lake winnipeg 200 cree operated york boats in inland waterways hbc lost jobs.
rossville mission
in 1840 methodists established rossville mission—the first methodist mission station west of lake superior in british north america—and 1875 christian crees lived near rossville mission. established in 1810 on eastern channel of nelson river below northern outlet of lake winnipeg. 6 years later, had grown village, consisting of thirty houses , church. in 1870s economic situation deteriorated rossville cree, local missionaries encouraged them locate further inland on lands more favourable agriculture , other traditional activities. hbc chief factor roderick ross reported james a. graham during 1870s village of rossville in chronic state of starvation , needed assistance hbc post. situation relieved when surplus population of 180 cree moved fisher river in 1877 , 1888. hbc earned $1000 in revenue assisting move.
