first stint reds
miller signed cincinnati reds undrafted free agent in 1998. miller played billings mustangs, in billings montana. made major league debut @ age 25 on september 4, 2001, in 7-1 reds home loss houston astros, game started , went hitless in 3 at-bats. got first big-league hit 6 days later, single off tony mcknight in 3-1 road loss pittsburgh pirates. miller remained reds organization through 2004.

miller played in 5 games 12 plate appearances minnesota twins in 2005. in 2005, pitched first time in professional game twins aaa-affiliate rochester red wings. (he has since pitched number of times—using knuckleball—for louisville bats.)
boston red sox
he signed boston red sox on april 25, 2006, , added pawtucket red sox triple-a roster. miller promoted boston on august 5, 2006, tenure in boston not last long. after appearing in 1 game (a 7-6 defeat against tampa bay devil rays on august 6, 2006), miller designated assignment on august 14, 2006, make room craig breslow, promoted pawtucket.

on july 31, 2007, braves called miller fill backup catcher role after previous backup catcher jarrod saltalamacchia traded day. made debut on august 2, hitting pinch-hit infield single. on august 5, miller hit game-tying rbi double, first extra-base hit since 2002, against colorado rockies. on september 15, miller hit first home run since 2002.
on august 1, 2008, miller designated assignment, , sent outright minors. returned braves active roster on september 1.
chicago white sox
miller became free agent following 2008 season , signed minor league contract chicago white sox.
as non-roster invitee white sox spring training, miller impressed enough awarded back-up catcher s role a. j. pierzynski. in first regular season game white sox on april 11, 2009 (vs. minnesota twins) miller went 2-4, 2 rbi , run scored. game resulted in 8-0 white sox victory.

on june 26, 2009, miller traded cincinnati reds outfielder norris hopper. on august 25, 2009, miller called cincinnati reds louisville bats. became free agent following season, re-signed minor league deal.
2010
miller started 2010 season not on reds 40-man roster, after injury of ryan hanigan, placed on active roster , took on backup duties ramón hernández. continued fill backup role, hanigan , hernandez switching spots on disabled list. starts came catcher reds young arms, such travis wood , matt maloney, since caught them in louisville. outrighted louisville on july 22, 2010, after hanigan came dl. miller called on september 1. reds outrighted him roster in offseason , refused assignment, becoming free agent. re-signed him minor league contract invitation spring training.
2013
on april 21, 2013, miller promoted reds, replacing injured ryan hanigan. made first start of season on april 23, 2013, against chicago cubs. reds lost game in innings. on may 10, 2013, miller outrighted louisville, after hanigan activated dl. called reds again on july 11, 2013, after placing hanigan on disabled list again. on august 7 miller started behind plate , hit 2 rbi doubles in game before leaving in fifth inning after home plate collision; later placed on 15-day disabled list. miller played in total of 17 games reds in 2013.
at conclusion of 2013 regular season, reds outrighted him roster. refused assignment, becoming free agent again. however, during reds annual redsfest unsigned miller appeared signing autographs. miller resign minor league deal reds next day.
2014
miller started 2014 season in triple-a louisville. miller served primary catcher bats due tucker barnhart starting season in cincinnati devin mesoraco on dl. on april 13, 2014, while pitching bats, miller used knuckleball strike out batter.
miller placed on inactive list in may before being placed on disabled list in june strain. bats announced on august 6 retire miller s number 8 jersey.
