ngubane born in kwampumuza, near pietermaritzburg. young girl, ngubane witnessed mother experiencing domestic violence male relatives , own husband. in 1965, mother had been kicked off of own land brothers in law , went traditional leader request land denied because had no sons. ngubane said, grew knowing had part of solution.


in 1990, ngubane launched rural women s movement (rwm).


from 1999 on, began research how women treated in rural kwazulu natal , found many treated subordinates men. began fighting against traditional courts bill felt give traditional, male leaders unchecked power undermine women s rights. bill died in 2014.


in 2011, ngubane addressed united nations on issues facing rural women.
