at least 4 association clubs not listed here someday try professionalism: riverside of portsmouth, ohio (1870); kekionga of fort wayne, indiana (1871); middletown of mansfield, connecticut (1872); resolute of elizabeth, new jersey (1873).


meanwhile, 2 brand new professional baseball clubs established in next 3 years, chicago white stockings 1870 , boston red stockings 1871. commercial origins may related survival alone 1877, , on 2010, while of rivals older , amateur roots fell away.

for preceding 1865 season marshall wright lists 30 members supposedly complete records of them. twenty-two of thirty in greater new york. bill ryczek calls 19 teams major in first season covers: sixteen of members , 3 others (lowell, harvard, , camden).


no 1 traveled , membership still depressed civil war. there had been 59 delegates @ march 1860 annual meeting, , 55 @ next annual meeting december (on new baseball calendar), thereby intended play during 1861 season war curtailed. 9 of 59 , eleven of 55 outside greater new york.
