the play begins marriage of king henry vi of england young margaret of anjou. margaret protégée , lover of william de la pole, 4th earl of suffolk, aims influence king through her. major obstacle suffolk , margaret s plan lord protector; humphrey, duke of gloucester, extremely popular common people , trusted king. gloucester s wife, however, has designs on throne, , has been led agent of suffolk dabble in necromancy. summons spirit , demands reveal future her, prophecies vague , before ritual finished, interrupted , arrested. @ court banished, embarrassment of gloucester. suffolk conspires cardinal beaufort , duke of somerset bring gloucester s ruin. suffolk accuses gloucester of treason , has him imprisoned, before gloucester can tried, suffolk sends 2 assassins kill him. meanwhile, richard, 3rd duke of york, reveals claim throne earls of salisbury , warwick, pledge support him.
suffolk banished role in gloucester s death, whilst winchester contracts fever , dies, cursing god. margaret, horrified @ suffolk s banishment, vows ensure return, killed pirates shortly after leaving england, , head sent distraught margaret. meanwhile, york has been appointed commander of army suppress revolt in ireland. before leaving, enlists former officer of his, jack cade, stage popular revolt in order ascertain whether common people support york should make open move power. @ first, rebellion successful, , cade sets himself mayor of london, rebellion put down when lord clifford (a supporter of henry) persuades common people, make cade s army, abandon cause. cade killed several days later alexander iden, kentish gentleman, garden climbs looking food.
york returns england army, claiming intends protect king duplicitous somerset. york vows disband forces if somerset arrested , charged treason. buckingham swears somerset prisoner in tower, when somerset enters ( @ liberty ), accompanied queen, york holds buckingham s vow broken, , announces claim throne, supported sons, edward , richard. english nobility take sides, supporting house of york, others supporting henry , house of lancaster. battle fought @ st albans in duke of somerset killed richard, , lord clifford york. battle lost, margaret persuades distraught king flee battlefield , head london. joined young clifford, vows revenge on yorkists death of father. play ends york, edward, richard, warwick , salisbury setting out in pursuit of henry, margaret , clifford.
