the dahan river once flowed north through area of taoyuan city empty taiwan strait 20 kilometres (12 mi) west of mouth of tamsui river. taoyuan plateau ancient alluvial fan of dahan river, created sediments eroded mountains. 30,000 years ago, tectonic movement caused taipei basin drop in elevation, , tamsui river system captured dahan river , caused flow northeast. result dahan river cut canyon through alluvial sediments more 30 kilometres (19 mi) reach new lower elevation. former channels of dahan river remain beheaded streams flow seasonally across plateau.
