the castle, name derived löwenfels ( lion rock ), 1 of later castles built in franconian switzerland , may have been erected in 14th century @ behest of seibot of egloffstein, recorded between 1285 , 1332.


the castle first mentioned in 1372. lord götz of egloffstein had give part of hitherto allodial castle bishop of bamberg after feud.


in 1380 castle captured troops of bishop of bamberg , burgrave frederick v of nuremberg. götz of egloffstein taken prisone , incarcerated in nuremberg. successor involved in feuds. castle destroyed in 1397 on orders of emperor wenceslaus.


1in 502 jobst of egloffstein sold castle bishop of bamberg , became seat of small episcopal amt.


in peasants war castle badly damaged in 1525, garrison under otto of mengersdorf able prevent being taken. restoration of castle carried out immediately. in 1553, during second margrave war, again damaged. reconstruction carried out more time. in 1594, leienfels incorporated episcopal amt of pottenstein. 1610, site being described uninhabitable. in 1643, during thirty years war repair of castle no longer considered worthwhile. in 1646, bricks of surviving buildings carried off , site left decay.


today, ruins have been designated bavarian state office monument protection listed site d-4-72-179-83 leienfels, formerly triangular site, remains of enceinte , main building corner tower, core 14th century; wall of former outer bailey, 14th century. , ground monument d-4-6234-0068 finds middle ages , modern period in area of castle ruins of leienfels
