ferdinand had held grand duchy of tuscany until 1801, when emperor francis had cede rule on tuscany france , louis of bourbon-parma according treaty of lunéville. grand duke, on terms napoleon, reached compensation former archbishopric in december 1802. secularisation accomplished, when prince-archbishop colloredo in vienna exile formally resigned in favour of ferdinand on 11 february 1803. 2 weeks later, episcopal territory secularized part of german mediatisation (reichsdeputationshauptschluss).

with final dissolution of holy roman empire in 1806, electorate re-established austrian duchy of salzburg , francis added duke of salzburg title emperor of austria. however, salzburg remained object of interests , negotiations during napoleonic wars. after war of fifth coalition passed bavaria according 1809 treaty of schönbrunn, incorporated salzach district tyrolean kitzbühel, traunstein , ried im innkreis in 1810.


the salzburg region divided between austria , bavaria in 1814 peace of paris. 1816 major part east of salzach river subsequently administered linz within upper austria, until salzburg duchy re-established in 1850.
