the freestanding tower



Østerlars: inside central column


the building 1 of denmark s oldest romanesque churches. on basis of coins dated 1157 found in floor, date of construction around 1160. fieldstone wall stands on foundations of bornholm limestone. double-arched apse bears similarities in lund cathedral. round nave has external diameter of 16 meters. in centre there large round hollow column, 6 meters wide. opening leads small room, known oven, inside column.


originally there small romanesque windows these enlarged after reformation. during 16th century, number of buttresses added support outer wall. conical roof replaced in 17th century. porch 1870.


the bell tower stands separately church in churchyard; tower original entrance , gate tower.


there 2 runestones, 1 inside porch (c. 1100) , outside (c.1070).
