a native of lahijan, asfar belonged gilaki clan of varudavand, , son of shiruya (sheroe). asfar had brother named shirzad, , grew in environment persian culture, memories of glories of persian empire, alive among them. many other gilakis , daylamites, asfar not muslim—he in fact nationalist, admired persian empire. according 10th-century arab historian al-masudi, of daylamite , gilaki leaders, zoroastrian , pagan, had become atheists. asfar 1 of many gilaki leaders entered service of alids, after establishing rule on tabaristan, gilan, , daylam.


rise power

asfar first mentioned in 917, during succession disputes control in tabaristan after death of alid ruler hasan al-utrush (r. 914–917). eventually, hasan ibn qasam (called al-da al-saghir, lesser missionary ) managed emerge victorious. around period, samanid empire seeking expand power transoxiana , khorasan northern iran, opposing zaydi shia islam there whilst advocating sunni movement against it.


reign , downfall

asfar expanded domains on ray, qazvin , other parts of jibal, apparently delegate of samanids, thereafter sovereign ruler, assuming emblem of kingship @ ray in disregard of nasr ii , abbasid caliph, al-muqtadir (r. 908-932). reportedly killed great number of citizens of qazvin, burned markets, demolished mosques , killed muezzin, , prohibited salah. furthermore, enforced poll-tax on whole population of city, along traders visiting other countries, acquiring vast sum. appointed lieutenant , compatriot mardavij governor of zanjan.

in 930, mardavij along asfar s brother, shirzad, ordered capture tarom, capital of sallarid ruler muhammad ibn musafir. during siege, mardavij, on urging of makan , muhammad, betrayed asfar revolting against him. aid of muhammad , makan, mardavij defeated , killed shirzad, including other members of varudavand clan. marched towards qazvin, residence of asfar. however, asfar managed flee. mardavij founded ziyarid dynasty, , became ruler of asfar s former territories.


asfar chased khorasan, being left no choice leave treasure had assembled in castle of alamut in daylam. when asfar arrived @ bayhaq, however, went back, aiming recover treasure @ alamut. when entered talaqan, town in daylam near qazvin, overwhelmed , killed mardavij, in 931.
