in summer 2012, erick thohir , jason levien, both @ time minority partners in nba s philadelphia 76ers, joined club owner william chang s ownership group. ambitions included expanding d.c. united s global reach prime goal, acquiring soccer stadium team.


on october 21, 2012, d.c united defeated columbus crew @ rfk, 3–2, , returned mls cup playoffs first time in 5 years. 3 goals d.c.united scored against columbus stood out in 7-game undefeated streak, team closed out regular season 5 wins , 2 draws in final 7 games. in last 15 games, united scored more 2 goals once, in playoff-clinching win on crew. in fact, game in final 6 in united scored more 1 goal. after losing star player dwayne de rosario season-ending knee injury, coach ben olsen had implemented strategy of playing deliberately defensive shell , aiming 1 clear chance in attack win game, tactics came known bennyball.

following 2013 season, team s roster once again underwent major overhaul. team traded first 2014 mls superdraft pick second position , selected steve birnbaum. re-entry draft saw return fold of bobby boswell, along fellow free agents sean franklin , fabian espindola. off-season trades brought in veterans davy arnaud, jeff parke , eddie johnson, while trade in 2014 added quality veteran in chris rolfe. while 2013 had brought precipitous one-season decline in mls history, 2014 d.c. united team managed greatest turnaround in other direction in league history. team claimed regular season eastern conference championship, before falling new york red bulls in playoffs. coach ben olsen named mls coach of year , goalie bill hamid given award top goalkeeper in league. team enjoyed great success in 2014-15 concacaf champions league, topping group play winning of group games , earning tournament s top seed quarterfinal round played in february 2015.


2014 ended on particularly high note franchise, district of columbia government approved plan purchase land @ buzzard point new stadium built , financed team , ownership.
