in 1929, 11-room concrete block detention building containing 2 cells (one white, , 1 black students) constructed house incorrigible or violent students. nicknamed white house . after corporal punishment @ school abolished in 1968, building used storage. in 2008, in response allegations of beatings , torture took place there, state officials sealed building in public ceremony, leaving memorial plaque, , has remained empty since time.
at time of justice department investigation in 2010–11, shortly before closure, dozier fenced, 159-acre high-risk residential facility 104 boys aged 13 21 had been committed there court; average length of stay @ dozier 9 twelve months. lived in several cottages, each boy having unlocked room. next door jackson juvenile offender center, maximum-risk facility chronic offenders guilty of felonies or violent crimes, housed residents in single, locked cells prison.
