production history
development

the show began development @ rubicon theatre company in ventura, california in december 2005. last smoker in america part of evening of readings of 3 one-act musicals russell (who had written side show) , melnick, directed sheryl kaller. following initial workshops @ rubicon, 2 additional readings, produced andy sandberg presented in new york in fall of 2006 @ york theatre , spring of 2008 @ new world stages.


following additional readings, last smoker in america received workshop production part of new york musical theatre festival (nymf) in october 2009. nymf production sold out , received extension of 1 month prior first performance.


the last smoker in america scheduled pre-new york engagement @ contemporary american theatre company (catco) in columbus, ohio fall of 2010. production co-produced catco , sandberg. in anticipation of ohio run, industry reading held in may 2010. following reading, announced producer andy sandberg, had co-directed reading, assume sole directorial duties of production well.


the last smoker in america began preview performances on september 29, 2010 @ vern riffe center in columbus, ohio. official opening on october 6, 2010. due strong sales , positive reviews, show added additional performances run. final performance of catco run held on october 24, 2010.

on june 11, 2012 full cast , creative team production announced. show opened off-broadway @ westside theatre on july 11, 2012 (previews) , officially on august 2, 2012. cast includes farah alvin, natalie venetia belcon, john bolton, , jake boyd. again directed sandberg, production features choreography ac ciulla. other members of creative team include fred lassen (music supervision), charles corcoran (sets), michael mcdonald (costumes), jeff croiter , grant yeager (lights) , bart fasbender (sound). show closed on september 1, 2012.
