limits

betting limits apply amount player may bet or raise, , come in 4 common forms: fixed limit, spread limit, pot limit, , no limit.

note: limits may applied raise or bet.

all such games have minimum bet stated maximums, , commonly betting unit, smallest denomination in bets can made.

fixed

in game played fixed-limit betting structure, maximum raise amount equals last bet amount (current level of bet). thus, maximum raise amount equal call amount, , maximum bet double of last bet.

spread

a game played spread-limit betting structure allows player raise amount within specified maximum (subject other betting rules).

for example, game $1000 spread-limit allows each player call , raise maximum of $1000.

a simpler approach bet maximum amount equal spread-limit. in above example, maximum bet (call + raise) limited $1000.

pot

a game played pot-limit betting structure allows player raise amount equal size of whole pot before raise.

for example, let assume there ante of $50 , single forced blind bet of $10 in pot @ start of regular betting round, , subsequent players seen/have seen cards. next player may bet minimum amount of $20 (double of last blind bet of $10). player may raise $80 (as there $50 + $10 + $20 = $80 in pot) bring total bet (also new current level of bet) $20 + $80 = $100. if in fact bets $100, total amount of pot $160, , next player may call (put minimum bet of) $100, , raise $260 total bet of $360 (after calling $100 bet, total amount of pot $260, may raise $260). next player entitled call @ $360 , raise $880 (after calling $360, pot contain $880, may raise $880).

a simpler approach bet maximum amount in pot. in above example, first seen player may bet minimum of $20 , maximum of $60. if bet maximum, next player may bet minimum of $60 maximum of $120. if bets maximum, next player entitled bet minimum of $120 , maximum of $240. note: in example, later bets, maximum bet twice of minimum bet because of chosen ante , forced blind bet amounts. other combinations, relationship may not hold.

a game played no-limit betting structure allows each player raise bet amount.
